Released in August 2007 and created by Fallon London, the Cadbury Gorilla advertisement is one of the most discussed, debated, and celebrated pieces of advertising Britain has ever produced. It makes almost no logical sense as a commercial for chocolate. And that, of course, is precisely why it works.
Context: Cadbury in 2007
By the summer of 2007, Cadbury was in trouble. A salmonella scare the previous year had damaged consumer trust, and the brand’s advertising had grown tired and predictable. The previous campaign — a series of executions featuring the tagline “A Glass and a Half Full of Joy” — was performing adequately but generating no excitement.
Fallon London, the British arm of the Minneapolis-founded creative agency, had been working with Cadbury for several years. When the brand came back to them for a new campaign, the brief was essentially: remind people why they love Cadbury. Recapture the feeling of joy.
What emerged from that brief was something no brief could have anticipated.
The Idea
Creative director Juan Cabral had an image in his head: a gorilla at a drum kit, alone in a purple room, preparing to perform the drum intro to “In The Air Tonight.” Nothing else. No explanation, no connection to chocolate, no narrative setup. Just the gorilla, the anticipation, and then the performance.
The reasoning — to the extent that advertising ever requires linear reasoning — was that Cadbury’s product creates a feeling of pure, uncomplicated pleasure. Phil Collins’ drum fill creates the same feeling. A gorilla experiencing that feeling, unself-consciously and completely, embodied what Cadbury wanted to say about itself better than any copy or product shot ever could.
The idea was almost killed multiple times. Brand managers wanted to understand the connection between the gorilla and the chocolate. Cabral’s answer was essentially: there isn’t one, and that’s the point. The connection is the feeling.
The Production
The gorilla suit was performed by Garon Michael, a professional actor who spent weeks working with the Fallon team to perfect the physical performance. The challenge was conveying the gorilla’s emotional journey — from quiet anticipation through to complete musical surrender — through a rubber suit.
The choice of “In The Air Tonight” was integral rather than incidental. The song’s slow, atmospheric build over its first three and a half minutes, culminating in one of the most famous drum fills in popular music, gave the commercial its entire dramatic structure. The gorilla’s stillness through the build-up, and his eventual physical release when the drums hit, mirrored the emotional structure of the song precisely.
The production also made a deliberate decision about realism. The gorilla looked like a gorilla rather than a cartoon or a cute mascot. The setting — a purple-lit room that suggested a backstage area — was minimal and slightly surreal. The cinematography was patient and respectful, treating the performance as a performance rather than a joke.
The Response
When the commercial aired for the first time on August 31, 2007, during the UK broadcast of Big Brother, the response was immediate and overwhelming. Television switchboards lit up. People called to ask what they had just watched. By morning, the clip was spreading online — this was 2007, before social media had its current infrastructure, but YouTube was already established, and the video spread rapidly.
Cadbury’s sales increased by 9% in the weeks following the launch. More significantly, the brand’s emotional metrics — consumer warmth, brand love, purchase intent — all moved sharply upward. The salmonella damage was repaired not by a rational reassurance campaign but by a gorilla playing drums.
The Industry Response
British advertising had spent years in the grip of what critics called “purpose fatigue” — the tendency of brands to justify their existence through social messaging rather than pure entertainment. The Gorilla was a reaction to that tendency. It was joyful without being saccharine. It was absurd without being stupid. It trusted the audience to feel something without explaining why they should feel it. Ad industry publication Campaign named it the best British commercial of the decade. The Sequels
Cadbury followed the Gorilla with additional ads featuring eyebrow-dancing children and a truck race — spots that recycled the spirit of the original (joy, music, pure feeling) without quite capturing its singular strangeness. The sequels were successful, but they demonstrated a truth about advertising: lightning rarely strikes twice in the same form.
